Camera Workshop: Filming on Location

To practice filming on location before going out to shoot our scripts, we went to Vinters Valley Nature Reserve to learn how to use a boom pole to get clear sound by connecting it to a tascam that the sound operator then used to record.

When using the boom pole, I found that if dangling wires hit the microphone, even if they didn't sound very loud without the headphones on, messed up the quality of the sound. Also, the boom pole couldn't be too far away from the person talking as otherwise they were too quiet.

Then, I edited the sound to match the video, but I found that this was difficult if the person who clapped or the slate wasn't in the shot, as it meant that I had no reference to when that sound was made in the silent video. To solve this, I looked for other points in the video such as how the actors walked as it was clear in the sound when they had stopped, or worked out phrases they said by lip reading.
