Celebrity Special for Stand Up to Cancer (2017)
Genre: Reality TV
TV viewers share their views on the weeks programming from their living rooms.
Analysis:
Since its start up in 1982, Channel 4 has always tried to air actuality programming which allows the public to give their own views. Some examples of this were Friday Alternative, which allowed people to give their views on the weeks news stories, as well as weekly politics programmes covering activity in Westminster as well as political activities in local communities. Gogglebox also allows for this type of analysis and diversity of views, showing that Channel 4's intention, even now, is be more diverse and different to BBC and ITV.
Although Gogglebox is classed as reality TV, it could also be classed as a documentary as it depicts real people sharing their own views. However, similar to reality TV shows such as The Only Way Is Essex, it is set in a domesticated setting and has limited locations of only different people's living rooms. However, the affect of the camera appearing to be in the TV to give the audience the sense they are in the viewer's living rooms is also similar to documentaries, such as the fixed camera structure used in One Born Every Minute as it is noninvasive but instead attempts to capture life as it actually happens.
Review:
Since this episode featured celebrities as well as normal people it was interesting to see if and how the two groups opinions differed from one another. I also liked how there were segments showing people's battles with cancer as it raised awareness for the cause and helped bring in donations to fund research. However, I thought that if this was a normal episode, I would not have found it as interesting as I did because I found that I was just re-watching TV I had already seen. Some of the viewer's opinions were funny though as they reacted in somewhat over the top ways or similarly to how my own family did. Although I enjoyed some of this episode, I would not watch Gogglebox again unless it was shorter as I found it a bit boring.
