Documentaries retell the TRUTH, and each one should always have a why? Because they involve real stories and real people in real situations.
ORINGINALITY is key and each documentary should attempt to:
-Provoke strong reactions
-Challenge
-Be authentic
-Be intimate
-Have relevance to a young audience
Therefore, content is more important than style.
Audience is also crucial as the documentary should show them something new about the chosen subject that it covers. This is why first hand stories are better than 'cliches', because they can change people's opinions and give them someone/something to relate to and learn from. The angle from which the documentary approaches the subject helps to determine this.
The brief for this project is to create a 10 minute documentary in a team of three which fits the theme of the strand 'My Obsession'. It should be catered for the BBC 3 audience and be to do with:
-Health/wellbeing
-Family/relationships
-Science/technology
-Wildlife/environment
-Community/social affairs
-Music/arts/culture
-History
Ideas:
I then selected the ideas from this that I thought would work best based on which ones would be accessible, have material that could be filmed, and were not too personal so that I could present them from a detached, unbiased viewpoint.
For example, I thought the idea of focusing on housing developments being built on green sites would be too personal because I live in an area where this happens often so I'm slightly biased against it, and also access would be difficult. This was similar to why I also decided to rule out the idea of gender disparity as, even though it is not too personal, it is an incredibly broad subject which would be hard to find material to film for, as were ideas such as stress, sleep, and TV.
However, after talking to my group we decided that I could combine some of these ideas as many of them overlap, such as people buying branded clothes, the beauty blogger who is 68 from Brighton, screens, and the internet. This led to new ideas such as dieting and social media as all of these ideas could add up to an obsession with image, portrayed in both a positive and negative way.
Obsession with image idea:
I then considered the following questions to ensure there was enough material behind my idea to make a unique documentary:
-Does the subject have meaning for me/others? Who?
I think that because of the recent movements in women's rights, and the domination of social media allowing images to be circulated all over the world easily, the subject of being obsessed with image would be relatable to women of all ages, because of specific interests in beauty and design.
It has meaning for me because I use social media and see that images are constantly used everywhere, both for purposes such as advertising, and also just to share things with friends.

-What can be shown that is new?
What inspired this idea in the first place was mainly the beauty blogger from Brighton, and that she blogs and uses her image to promote empowerment among both younger and older women, because as an older woman she had begun to feel forgotten, which I think is something that is not always realised.

-What about the idea is unique?
The focus on both the positive and the negative, but also focusing on how the internet can help to circulate image, and how powerful this can be.

-What would the audience want to know more about?
How images can be used both positively and negatively, to either empower and stand out, or to conform and fit in.

-What is the best angle to approach this subject?
From a detached viewpoint which is balanced and shows both the positive and negative side as there isn't really a set answer. Instead the audience should be given enough information to be able to come to their own conclusions.

-What/who is the best focus for the film?
How the obsession effects people, and how the internet can allow this.

-What can be filmed?
Case studies, such as beauty bloggers, style/design conventions such as those which feature interior design, people using the internet and the dominance of screens which project images, stores which sell products based on image/image of the brand.
