News: Team ideas

Sport & Charity

Brand: Sport news

Locations: Muddy Dog Challenge, Tough Mudder, Autumn Wold Run, and the Pretty Muddy Challenge in Finsbury Park; all events which take place between 29th September and 6th October (Michael's Blog, 2018a). Battersea Dogs and Cats Home (and possibly other charities?)

Contributors: Competitors in the sports challenges (how do they feel about being able to help these charities?); Charity workers

Stories: Package on why the contribution from sporting events is important to charities like Battersea, especially now since more animals are being admitted to Battersea; the illegal pet industry is part of the reason for this rise in animals being admitted (Michael's Blog, 2018b).
Live interviews with competitors as they finish the challenge, as well as with the event organiser(s) to hear their opinions on why they do these events, and if helping charities influences them to take on the challenges.

Impact and relevance: These stories would have impact now because the amount of animals being admitted to Battersea is increasing at the moment, and these sporting events which are helping, such as Tough Mudder, are taking place all the over world regularly (Tough Mudder, s.d). The competitors in these events could be argued to be a community in their own right, since there are social media pages for these runs. Therefore, this is the audience the news would be relevant for, since it would show them the impact they have made.
However, what is happening at charities like Battersea is a matter of public interest, so although it is more relevant for the niche audience of competitors, it could also be relevant to people who donate to Battersea, or who have an interest in animal welfare.

Importance of Art

Brand: Arts news

Locations: Places where art therapy sessions are held, or have a focus promoting art for wellbeing in the community, such as Sussex Art Therapy, Live Well Kent in Ashford, Rainham Art Club, Health and Living in Art in Strood, and Faversham Art Society (My UCA blog, 2018).

Contributors: Artist (professional or amateur); a therapist? Participants in art therapy

Stories: Package showing how art is important because it can be used as therapy.
Live interview with an artist giving their opinion on art as therapy, why they do art, what their art gives others, and why they think art is important, to them, and to society overall.

Impact and relevance: This could be relevant to young people who may not be aware that these sessions are open to them in their community. It could also be relevant to the more niche audience of people who are interested in art.
However, it could have an impact on the whole general public, since mental health is an important issue which affects everyone, but that people can find hard to talk about. For example, according to The Guardian (2017), '51% of young people believe that anyone their age diagnosed with a mental illness would be embarrassed'. Therefore, these stories could raise needed awareness and help get people talking.
Although, a limitation to this idea is that it has been reported by ITV News (2018) recently, so may already be known about to some members of the audience. However, we could add new information, by offering a wider view of the story than this report, which only features one person's experience.

Impact of Fake News Investigation

Brand: Watchdog? Covering important issues the public need to be warned about

Locations: Streets; newspaper office, or news station

Contributors: Professional journalist; members of the public

Stories: Package of impact of fake news on the public with a reader showing statistics leading into vox pops on the street asking public opinion and letting people guess which headline is fake from two real ones, and a fake one (Aurelija's TV production blog, 2018).
Live interview with a journalist on how fake news is impacting how news is delivered in newspapers/news bulletins, and the way journalists filter stories and sources.

Impact and relevance: Since this issue is very new, the public and the media are only just beginning to get used to how it should be handled. For example, in 2017, 53% of the people polled by The Guardian worried about fake news appearing on their social media, which has led to an increase in people supporting more traditional media, such as newspapers (Siddique, 2018).
Therefore, these stories would have a huge impact on social media users all over the country, and it is very relevant now because fake news is something which has only been widespread for about a year.

Gaming and Wellbeing

Brand: Gaming news

Locations: AllGen gaming in Rochester; psychologist's office

Contributors: Gamers, a presenter, and a psychologist specialising in gaming disorder or similar addictions

Stories: Video game violence and behaviour; playing as the hero or cooperatively in a team makes players less aggressive. Package at AllGen gaming in  Rochester as reporter tries cooperative games and playing the hero with gamers, as well as interviews with gamers.
Gaming disorder classified as a mental health disorder; live interview with a psychologist who could discuss the challenges, possible treatment, and the debate about whether it was necessary to classify gaming disorder. To introduce this story to the audience the studio presenter could give facts and statistics via a reader to lead into the interview with a correspondent.

Impact and relevance: The research for prosocial behaviour and video game violence has been ongoing for some time, but it has been recently discovered that playing cooperatively can lower aggression, as has gaming disorder only just been classified as a mental health disorder.
These stories would be relevant to young people who play games, especially since with the rise of gaming being accessible on phones and tablets anywhere at anytime, games are getting more addictive. It could also impact parents, since it could be their kids who are playing violent or addictive games, which could worry them.
Limitations to this idea are however that the research into video game violence and prosocial behaviour is ambiguous and ongoing, although we can present the findings which are currently available. Gaming disorder has also already been covered in the media, including by BBC Click (Play Date, 2018). However, this programme is especially for an audience interested in technology. Our report could be different by being shorter and more concise, which could be understood by people who have zero knowledge about technology.
